Diamond Guide, The Four C’s
Diamonds can feel technical, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s a simplified version of the “Four C’s”, the essentials behind every diamond we choose, whether natural or lab-grown.
Diamond cut
The cut determines how a diamond reflects light. Better cut = more brilliance.
Diamonds are typically divided into two groups:
Brilliant Cut
The classic round shape you see in most fine jewelry. Clean, timeless, radiant.
Fancy Cut
Everything else: marquise, baguette, pear, emerald, oval.
At ENNUI Atelier, you’ll find marquise diamonds in our Inner Strength labret and baguettes in our Rectangular Labret.
Diamond color
Diamonds range from colorless (D) to warm-toned (Z).
We use I-color diamonds, also called Top Wesselton or Fine White, a sweet spot of beauty and brightness.
There are also Fancy Color Diamonds: yellow, blue, pink, purple, black, brown.
We love black diamonds (see our Ares Ring and Reversible diamond hoops) and occasionally use rich brown tones as well.
Diamond clarity
Almost every diamond has tiny natural characteristics.
We use SI clarity: small inclusions visible only under x10 magnification and not noticeable to the naked eye.
Perfect is boring, character is beautiful.
Diamond carat
Carat refers to weight, not size. One carat = 0.2 g.
The higher the carat, the larger and more valuable the stone.
(Tip: Don’t confuse carat with karat, which refers to gold purity.)
Natural vs Lab-Grown
Both are real diamonds. One formed in the earth, one formed through innovation. Same grading system. Same beauty. Different origin stories.
